We have not been able to find out anything of this plant's ancestors. It may well be associated with P. citronellum which has produced, as seedlings, a number of strongly lemon scented offspring - Lemon Essence, Lemon Fancy, Lemon Kiss, Lemon Meringue, Super Lemon, among others. The leaves are roughly hairy, small with sharp nodes and the flowers are pink.
